Free resources

There are many ways to homeschool on a budget. You do not need to spend a lot on curriculum packages, supplies, and books. There are many resources at little to no cost. Choose simple, inexpensive, and free options. By getting free resources first, you limit your costs. To keep homeschool costs low, the two most useful free resources are the library and the internet (educational websites, games, and videos). You can find free curriculum guidelines, lesson plans, worksheets, printables, educational games, educational videos, ebooks, virtual experiments, virtual museums, and virtual field trips. There are many free homeschool resources out there and it is time consuming to sort through the many options available. Here is a useful list of free resources.

Free places as resources

Libraries

Libraries have many children's books, magazines, and educational DVDs you can use for your homeschool. Libraries also have free children's programs like story time, arts and crafts, games, and holiday events.

Museums

There are many museums across the country that are free. There may be a free art museum, history museum, natural history museum, or science museum near you. Some museums have children's activities. Museums help children appreciate art, science, history, and culture.

Parks

Parks provide an outdoor experience to learn about nature. You can take a walk on a trail and observe the animals and plants. Some parks have a visitor center which has information to educate people about nature and the environment. They may have displays of small live animals or displays about natural history like preserved mounted animals or nature dioramas. Other natural places to visit are nature centers, gardens, and farms.

Businesses

Visit a fire station, police station, bank, post office, city hall, grocery store, nursing home, hospital, non-profit organization, factory, recycling center, tv or radio station, movie theater, performing arts center, or university. Some places provide tours or someone who works there to talk about and show what that they do.
